Ponzi Schemes: AGA-AFRICA, SEC Hold Webinar 2nd to 3rd March 2021

US based Attorney General Alliance Africa (AGA-Africa), in collaboration with the apex regulatory organization for the Nigerian capital market, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is organizing a virtual conference from 2nd to 3rd March 2021 with the theme “Curbing the Tide of Ponzi schemes: The Role of the Regulator”.

Guests expected at the event are; AGA-Africa Board Member, Markus Green , Attorney General of the Federation & Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, Minister of Finance, Budget & National Planning Zainab Ahmed, Director-General of SEC Nigeria, Lamido Yuguda, while Dr Jean Phillipo of Malawi, Terry Davis and James Manyonge will serve as facilitators alongside. Ebelechukwu Enedah as moderator.

According to a statement by SEC, Speakers include, the Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice, Kano State, Musa Lawan, Senior Partner, PUNUKA Attorneys & Solicitors, Anthony Idigbe, and Prof. Moin  Yahya, of the  University of Alberta.

Other speakers are; General Counsel AGA, USAT, Prof. David Blake,  Attorney General for the State of New York, Letitia “Tish” James, President of Fund Managers Association of Nigeria, Tope Omojokun, and Prof. Marie Springer of John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

The conference, targeted at the regulatory agencies, law officers, compliance officers, judges, lawyers, legislators, capital market, government officials and the public, is expected to attract about 140 in-venue participants at three designated locations where the webinar will be streamed live with appropriate social distancing measures enforced for the safety of the participants.

It is also expected that other online participants will be able to join through GoTo Meeting webinar platform.

The objective of the symposium, According to SEC,  is to enhance capacity, through the anticipated thought provoking discussions amongst law officers, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, lawyers and the public in tackling the different types of Ponzi Schemes through prevention, investigation and prosecution of those involved in such fraudulent acts which is expected to become prevalent in this era of increased use of the cyberspace occasioned by the social distancing measures promoted to curb the spread of the corona virus pandemic.

The Commission/SEC is the apex regulatory organization for the Nigerian capital market and the Investment and Securities Act mandates the Commission regulate investment schemes in whatever form and act in the public interest having regard to the protection of investors and maintenance of a fair and orderly market. The Commission is empowered to promote investors’ education, investigate, and penalize any entity in violation of the Act and it is believed that the online webinar would serve as a platform to assist the Commission achieve one of its core mandate.
