The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to promoting Nigeria’s economic and industrial development through accurate and reliable measurement systems.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the 2026 World Metrology Day celebration, the Director-General of SON, Ifeanyi Okeke, said measurement standards remain critical to industrial growth, consumer protection, innovation and fair trade.
Okeke explained that metrology, the science of measurement, provides the foundation for confidence in products, services, commercial transactions and public policy formulation.
According to him, reliable and traceable measurements help industries comply with standards, improve product quality, reduce trade disputes and strengthen consumer confidence in goods and services.
He disclosed that captains of industry, policymakers, innovators, small and medium-scale enterprises operators, and business owners would gather at the C Event Centre in Abuja on May 20 for discussions on how measurement systems can drive economic development.
The SON Director-General urged stakeholders across both public and private sectors to participate in the event to better position their businesses for growth and competitiveness.
He noted that accurate measurements are essential for Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global market, as they enable locally produced goods and services to meet international standards and requirements.
Okeke further stated that SON is strengthening the nation’s measurement infrastructure and collaborating with relevant national and international organisations to promote fairness, transparency and confidence across key sectors of the economy.
World Metrology Day is celebrated globally every May 20 to highlight the importance of measurement science in industry, trade, governance, sustainable development and everyday life.
The 2026 theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” emphasises the role of reliable measurements in evidence-based decision-making and national development.
Okeke assured that Standards Organisation of Nigeria would continue to support industries, regulators, consumers and policymakers with standards and measurement systems that promote quality, safety and sustainable economic growth.
