Nigerian Government Denies Introducing New Vehicle Tax, Labels Viral Infographic Fake

The Federal Government has dismissed claims circulating online that it has introduced a new tax on vehicles, describing the information as false and misleading.

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) said a viral infographic suggesting that vehicle owners would be required to pay a new levy from July 1, 2026, did not originate from the government or any of its agencies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the NRS Chairman and the agency’s spokesperson, Dare Adekanmbi, clarified that no such tax has been introduced.

The misleading infographic had instructed owners of private, commercial, and corporate vehicles to make payments “online or at approved banks and agencies,” without specifying any tax rate. It also directed the public to a website inconsistent with the agency’s official platform.

According to Adekanmbi, the material was designed to appear credible by featuring government insignia, but stressed that it is entirely fabricated.

“The information did not emanate from the Service or any government agency,” he said, urging citizens to disregard the message.

The NRS advised Nigerians to rely only on verified official channels for information on government policies and tax matters, warning against the spread of unverified content online.

The agency further encouraged the public to follow its official website and social media platforms for accurate updates on its activities.
