The Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria marked its 30th anniversary with a call for increased women’s participation in the maritime sector.
The organization’s annual business luncheon and award night, themed “Oceans: Our Obligations, Our Opportunities, Our Women,” brought together industry stakeholders, including Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Outstanding women in the maritime sector were honored for their contributions, including past and present WISTA presidents.
Experts explored topics such as technology and innovation in the ocean economy, sustainable oceans, and women’s roles in maritime sustainability.
The event provided a platform for stakeholders to discuss industry-related issues and potential collaborations.
Distinguished guests included Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Elpi Petraki, President of WISTA International, Jemila Jawulaa Mahamah, Secretary of WISTA International, Moremi Ojudu, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South West), and representatives from the Nigerian Navy, Women in Maritime Africa, and other organizations.
WISTA Nigeria aims to promote and support women in the maritime industry, increasing gender diversity and professional development.
The organization has grown to become a prominent voice in the sector, with a global network of over 5,100 members.
