The Paramount Ruler of Mbo Local Government Area (LGA) in Akwa Ibom state, HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang, and his wife are grateful to be alive after a harrowing experience.
They sustained serious gun injuries when thugs reportedly abducted the monarch from his Ebughu Palace on the night of May 18.
The monarch was eventually released on Sunday night after a ransom of N50 million was paid, according to reports.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom Command, ASP Timfon John, confirmed the release but did not provide details on whether money was exchanged.
However, a community leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the monarch was freed early Monday morning after the abductors received N50 million.
According to eye witnesses, the abduction took place at around 9 pm on May 18, with the assailants using firearms to seize the monarch and leaving his wife, Obonganwan Okon Abang, injured in the leg.
“The community is outraged, especially upon learning that some local youths were involved in the kidnapping.
“We are determined to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable,” the leader said.
“This incident was driven by greed and envy towards the monarch’s position. We wish him a long and peaceful reign.
“The monarch is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital, while his wife, who was shot during the abduction, is recovering well and will be discharged soon.” He further revealed.
This incident has raised concerns about the escalating insecurity in the state, particularly the targeting of prominent individuals.
The Oro ethnic group, in particular, is vulnerable due to its poor road infrastructure and easily accessible waterways.
