United Capital Group Holds Memorial Service for Six Staff Members Lost in Afriland Towers Fire

A solemn and befitting memorial service was held yesterday at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, to honor the lives of six United Capital Group staff members who tragically lost their lives in a fire incident at Afriland Towers, the company’s Lagos headquarters, on September 16, 2025.

The service brought together regulators, industry leaders, clients, partners, and the wider business community in solidarity to commiserate with the organization and the families of the departed.

The memorial service featured heartfelt tributes from family members, friends, and colleagues, capturing the lives and legacies of Jesutoni Shodipo, Kehinde Adeoye, Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke, Olumide Oyefodunrin, Opeyemi Oloyede, and Rebecca Adenuga.

United Capital Group’s CEO, Peter Ashade, delivered a moving tribute, reflecting on the weight of the loss and sharing personal recollections of each of the deceased.

Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, also spoke, extending his deep condolences to the families and reaffirming the unity and resilience of the United Capital and Heirs Holdings family in mourning.

The service concluded with a word of encouragement from Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, providing hope and consolation, followed by a stirring rendition from renowned singer Timi Dakolo.

Guests described the ceremony as a respectful and dignified occasion, befitting the memory of the departed colleagues.

The event was also streamed live for well-wishers outside the country, with additional viewing centers set up in Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The fire incident at Afriland Towers, which houses offices of United Capital Plc, United Bank for Africa, and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, resulted in at least 10 fatalities, including four FIRS personnel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
