In a significant move to enhance trade facilitation and streamline operations, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, Customs Area Controller of Tin-Can Island Port Command, has successfully addressed the long-standing issue of multiple alerts at the port.
This development came to light during a stakeholders’ meeting held on February 4, 2025, at the command’s conference hall.
Comptroller Onyeka’s reforms aim to ensure that alerts are only issued by authorized units, such as the Valuation Department or the Customs Intelligence Unit (CIU), based on intelligence and with his direct approval.
This change is expected to prevent unnecessary delays in cargo clearance and promote a more conducive business environment.
Stakeholders, including government agencies, terminal operators, freight forwarders, importers, and customs agents, welcomed the reforms and praised Comptroller Onyeka’s proactive approach.
Eugene Nweke, Secretary of the Customs Consultative Committee (CCC), commended Onyeka’s commitment to resolving longstanding challenges, noting that the reforms align with the resolutions of the Comptroller General of Customs Conference held in Abuja in 2024.
The CCC expressed optimism about the reforms and pledged their support for Onyeka’s leadership.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with stakeholders praising the improved dialogue and Onyeka’s dedication to addressing their concerns.
With these reforms in place, Tin-Can Island Port is poised to become a hub for efficient and transparent trade operations, fostering economic growth and development in Nigeria.
