SON to Commemorate World Standards Day with “Walk for Standards”

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is gearing up to celebrate the 2025 World Standards Day, a global event that commemorates the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who develop voluntary technical agreements known as international standards.

This year’s theme is “Shared Vision For a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 17: Partnership For the Goals,” highlighting the importance of partnerships in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To mark this significant occasion, SON will organize a “Walk for Standards” on Saturday, October 11th, 2025. The walk, which will take place in Lagos, aims to raise awareness on the critical role of standards in everyday life and in achieving the SDGs.

Participants will converge at SON’s Ogba office at 8:00 am and walk through a designated route, spreading the message of standards and sustainability.

According to Talatu Ethan, Director of Corporate Affairs at SON, the event is open to everyone, including Nigerians and foreigners living in the country.

“Indeed, everyone is invited. Participation is free, and we will be pleased to have people trooping in for the walk as a demonstration of their commitment to Standards and Sustainability,” she stated.

The event can also be maximized for exercise, networking, and possible business opportunities.

The World Standards Day is a veritable platform that stakeholders in different sectors of the economy look forward to for enlightenment on standardization issues and key global issues that impact businesses and living.

Last year’s edition was a huge success, with the day used to draw necessary attention to Artificial Intelligence.

The Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, has expressed his delight in having as many Nigerians as possible participate in the program.

“We want to use this opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of standards in achieving the SDGs and to encourage everyone to play a role in promoting sustainability,” he said.

The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all.

SDG 17, which is the focus of this year’s World Standards Day, emphasizes the importance of partnerships between governments, the private sector, and civil society in achieving the goals.

Standards play a critical role in achieving the SDGs by providing a framework for businesses and organizations to operate in a sustainable and responsible manner.

By adopting international standards, businesses can ensure that their products and services meet certain quality, safety, and environmental standards, which can contribute to the achievement of the SDGs.

The “Walk for Standards” is a fun and engaging way to raise awareness about the importance of standards and sustainability.

It is an opportunity for Nigerians to come together and demonstrate their commitment to promoting sustainability and achieving the SDGs.

As the world comes together to celebrate the World Standards Day, SON is encouraging everyone to participate in the “Walk for Standards” and to join the movement towards a more sustainable future.

With the theme “Shared Vision For a Better World,” this year’s event promises to be an exciting and thought-provoking experience for all participants.
