The Nigerian Customs has launched a special operation team, Operation Whirlwind, to crack down on the smuggling of Petroleum Products to neighboring countries.
The team was inaugurated by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who emphasized the team’s crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s economy from the negative impacts of smuggling.
During a forum for the newly formed team in Abuja, CGC Adeniyi stressed the importance of bringing economic saboteurs to justice.
He highlighted the need for the team to work diligently to protect Nigeria’s economy, stating that there is zero tolerance for sabotage.
The workshop held at the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College aimed to equip the Operation Whirlwind team with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively combat smuggling, especially of petroleum products diverted to neighboring countries.
Adeniyi emphasized that the operation is intelligence-driven and will support the highest level of political will.
The CGC emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration among the officers, noting that they were selected based on their competence for the job.
He urged them to work together as a team and complement the existing structure to achieve success in their mission.
The Director of Legal Services is set to educate the team on the proper procedures for filing seizures, ensuring that all legal aspects of their operations are handled correctly.
The launch of Operation Whirlwind signifies a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against smuggling and economic sabotage.
