Oyo State Government Launches 4-Year Plan to Combat Malnutrition

The Oyo State Government has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to launch a 4-year Multi-Sectoral Strategic Plan of Action on Food and Nutrition (OYSMPFAN).

This initiative aims to tackle malnutrition and hunger among children and women in the state.

Professor Misbaudeen Babatunde, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, launched the project in Ibadan, emphasizing the state government’s commitment to eradicating malnutrition.

The plan will serve as a roadmap to address food and nutrition security challenges at all levels, from individuals to the state government.

The Oyo state government has allocated ₦250 million as its counterpart fund for the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRIN) project and an additional ₦100 million for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund project, totaling ₦350 million.

According to UNICEF representative Boluwatife Ogunjimi, the stunted rate in Oyo state is approximately 34.5%, with child mortality largely attributable to malnutrition. Good nutrition plays a crucial role in preventing child deaths.

The Permanent Secretary, Tunde Ayanleke, assured UNICEF that the state government would implement the plan’s activities judiciously, utilizing human, material, and financial resources effectively.

This initiative aligns with the policies of the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration and the UNICEF Strategic Plan 2022-2025, which focuses on promoting the rights of all children everywhere.
