In a significant move to support the welfare of persons with disabilities, the Oyo State Government has announced a 70% increase in the 2025 capital budgetary allocation for this group.
This was disclosed by Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by his Deputy, Bayo Lawal, during the 2024 Stakeholders summit and International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Ibadan.
The increased budget allocation, which now stands at N877.5 million, is a response to the requests made by persons with disabilities during the last Budget Town Hall meetings.
This significant increase is expected to cover various needs, including transportation empowerment, training of relevant agencies, and the purchase of assistive devices and mobility equipment.
In addition to the budget increase, the Oyo State Government has also taken steps to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the civil service.
To date, 510 persons with disabilities have been recruited into the Oyo State Civil Service. Furthermore, Governor Makinde has directed that the quota for persons with disabilities must be protected in every ministry.
The Oyo State Government’s commitment to supporting persons with disabilities is also evident in the establishment of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities.
The agency, which was established during Governor Makinde’s first term in office, is responsible for promoting the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the state.
In his remarks, Governor Makinde emphasized his administration’s commitment to providing opportunities for persons with disabilities.
He noted that his administration has implemented various initiatives to improve access to governance and quality of service for persons with disabilities.
The Director-General of the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities, Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi, also commended Governor Makinde’s administration for its commitment to supporting persons with disabilities.
He noted that the agency has received significant support from the administration, which has enabled it to carry out its mandate effectively.
Overall, the Oyo State Government’s approval of a 70% budget increase for persons with disabilities is a significant step towards promoting the inclusion and welfare of this group.
