The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has outlined its plans for port development and efficiency, highlighting its commitment to facilitating maritime trade in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 2025 Conference of the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON) in Lagos, the Managing Director of the NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, represented by Hadiza Usman Shu’aibu, emphasized the Authority’s role in aligning with international best practices.
He disclosed that the NPA has commenced the finalization of documentation and commencement of actual works on the $1 billion worth construction of the aged Tincan Island Port Complex and the comprehensive rehabilitation of Apapa, Rivers, Onne, Warri, and Calabar Port Complexes.
According to Dr Dantsoho, the NPA is also working on port capacity expansion through the operationalization of new ports and advancement of green port development, including the development of the Snake Island Port and the Badagry Deep Seaport.
He noted that the Authority is aggressively implementing the Port Community System (PCS) and the National Single Window (NSW) to enhance efficiency and reduce bureaucracy.
“The NPA has also introduced an electronic truck call-up system and satellite truck parks to manage truck traffic and improve ease of doing business at the ports.” He said.
Under Dr. Dantsoho’s leadership, the NPA has achieved significant milestones, including Nigeria’s attainment of a trade surplus of N5.81 trillion ($3.7 billion) in the third quarter of 2024.
The Authority has also put in place Public-Private Partnership modalities to drive revenue from ports and has promoted Nigeria’s standing in the comity of maritime nations through its election as the President of the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA).
The NPA’s 2024 Consolidated Management Report highlights significant improvements in port activities, with cargo throughput increasing by 45.1% to 103,336,863 metric tons in 2024.
Dr. Dantsoho reiterated the NPA’s committment to a continued relationship and optimal support to AMJON.
