Nigeria’s Livestock Sector Gets Boost as NIRSAL Prepares Actors for $2.5bn FDI

NIRSAL Plc, with support from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, has launched a Feedlot Management Training Program to prepare Nigeria’s livestock value chain actors to tap into a $2.5 billion Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) deal with global meatpacking giant, JBS.

According to a release signed by Jude Nnadozie, Head, Corporate Communications NIRDAL, the training program aims to improve feed formulation practices, reduce input waste, and optimize livestock finishing cycles for increased market value.

This will enable Nigerian livestock producers to meet the demands of the JBS partnership, which includes the construction of six modern meat processing plants across the country.

The partnership with JBS and other local companies like ABIS Group, the release highlighted, will create a significant demand for high-quality feedstock from local producers.

“NIRSAL’s intervention aims to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s livestock sector by addressing structural gaps through technical capacity-building, risk-sharing incentives, and end-to-end value chain support.”

Nigeria’s livestock sector has been hampered by outdated practices, poor-quality feed, and limited financing. However, with NIRSAL’s support, the sector is poised for transformation.

The Feedlot Management Training Program is a targeted intervention aimed at creating bankable agribusinesses and improving the productivity and profitability of livestock producers.

Participants in the first cohort of the training program, drawn from various stakeholders, praised the initiative as “eye-opening and apt.” They urged for its expansion nationwide to benefit more livestock value chain actors.

NIRSAL Plc has facilitated over N250 billion into agricultural value chains since its establishment in 2013.

The institution continues to redefine agriculture-related credit risk, improve credit flow, and drive agribusiness development in Nigeria.
