Nigeria’s Judiciary Pledges Support for Digital Transformation at 2024 National Workshop

The 2024 National Workshop for Justices and Judges on Legal Issues in Telecommunications kicked off on November 4, 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.

The event, organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI), aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of judicial officers in addressing emerging issues in the telecommunications sector.

Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute, delivered the keynote address.

She emphasized the pivotal role of technology in telecommunications in advancing Nigeria’s economic system and driving globalization ¹. Kekere-Ekun highlighted two critical issues: cybersecurity and the challenges of exploring the digital space.

The Chief Justice noted the increased risk of consumer data misuse and the need for improved strategies to protect consumers. She also addressed deficiencies in the banking sector due to reliance on digital services provided by the telecommunications sector, citing electronically backed transactions, hacked online banking platforms, and technological glitches as concerns requiring adjudication.

Kekere-Ekun expressed hope that the workshop would facilitate discussions on current challenges, cross-fertilize ideas, and equip judicial officers with technical skills to adjudicate disputes arising from the sector.

She emphasized the urgency of embracing technological innovations and the Judiciary’s role in expediting digital transformation.

 

The workshop features discussions on various topics, including: Cybersecurity Threats, The role of the Judiciary in accelerating Nigeria’s digital transformation, Telecommunications Regulation and Dispute Resolution.

The Chief Justice commended the NCC’s efforts to protect consumers from unfair practices and assured that the Nigerian Judiciary is committed to the development of the telecommunications sector.

She recognized the contributions of key stakeholders, including Hon. Justice John Inyang Okoro, Hon. Justice Salisu Garba Abdullahi, and Dr. Aminu Maida.
