By Barnabas Esiet.

In a historic event, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, was awarded the “Iconic Maritime Personality of the Year 2024” by Nigerian maritime journalists.

This prestigious award marks a significant milestone in Adeniyi’s illustrious career, as it is the first time all maritime journalists have come together to honor a single stakeholder.

During the award ceremony organised in Lagos, Adeniyi emphasized the need for unity among maritime journalists, urging them to speak with one voice to make a greater impact in the industry.

He also called on heads of maritime parastatals to prioritize the welfare of journalists covering the sector.

Adeniyi expressed concern over the proliferation of beat associations in maritime media practice and multiple associations in the clearing and forwarding business.

Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, ACG Charles Orbih, praised Adeniyi’s leadership, citing the modernization of customs procedures, strengthened risk management, and optimized revenue collection.

Orbih highlighted the remarkable transformation that has occurred within the service under Adeniyi’s stewardship, including exceeding revenue collections and fostering stronger relationships with other government agencies and international organizations.

The award night was attended by prominent personalities in the maritime industry, including Olayiwola Shittu, Segun Oduntan, Frank Ogunojemite, Dr. Eugene Nweke, and Remi Ogungbemi.

The event was a celebration of Adeniyi’s achievements and a testament to the importance of unity and collaboration in advancing the welfare and interests of maritime journalists and industry practitioners alike.
