Nigeria Takes Leap into 6GHz Band for Wi-Fi 6 Applications

By Newsshelve Correspondent.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken a significant step towards advancing the country’s telecommunications sector by embracing the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 applications.

At the Annual Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies held in Lagos recently, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Dr. Aminu Maida, emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to join the league of countries utilizing this spectrum.

Dr. Maida highlighted the commission’s strategic focus areas, driven by recognizing unique stakeholder perspectives, to enhance telecommunication service delivery in Nigeria.

Key factors identified include people, collaboration, data, compliance, and digitalization.

Guided by the Federal Government’s strategic blueprint, centered around knowledge policies, infrastructure, innovation, entrepreneurship, capital, and trade, the NCC aims to set the ball rolling for improved services.

The 6GHz band, spanning 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, offers substantial increases in available spectrum, supporting growing demands for high-speed internet and advanced applications.

Wi-Fi plays a crucial role in fixed broadband connectivity in homes, offices, and other environments.

With the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands becoming overwhelmed due to increased capacity demands, identifying complementary frequency bands is imperative.

The 2023 World Radiocommunications Conference allocated the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi and IMT applications, following a lengthy study cycle.

The NCC presented its thoughts and recommendations on spectrum usage, seeking stakeholder feedback for informed decision-making.

Dr. Maida’s leadership at the NCC marks a new era for Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. With his extensive experience in FinTech and telecoms, Dr. Maida aims to drive growth and innovation.

His appointment by President Bola Tinubu in October 2023 signaled a commitment to advancing Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.

As Nigeria embarks on this significant journey, the NCC’s collaborative approach ensures that stakeholder inputs guide decision-making.

The 6GHz band’s potential to enhance Wi-Fi capabilities and support growing demands for high-speed internet underscores the NCC’s dedication to fostering a vibrant telecommunications ecosystem.

Nigeria’s adoption of the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 applications represents a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications journey.

Under Dr. Maida’s leadership, the NCC is poised to drive growth, innovation, and improved services, cementing Nigeria’s position in the global telecommunications landscape.
