Assistant Comptroller of Customs Akpevwe Ogboru has made history by becoming the first female officer of the Nigeria Customs Service to complete a solo motorbike journey from Nigeria to Belgium and back.
The remarkable 72-day adventure, which spanned 22 countries across Africa and Europe, ended on October 11, 2025, with Ogboru’s triumphant return to the Seme-Krake Joint Border Post.
Ogboru’s journey was motivated by her desire to empower women and girls, encouraging them to pursue their dreams fearlessly despite opposition or doubt.
“This ride was for women’s inclusivity and the empowerment of the girl-child,” she said. “Be strong, don’t be discouraged. Anything you set your mind to do, do it. Don’t allow anyone to discourage you.”
Ogboru named her motorcycle “Rocky,” symbolizing endurance and resilience. Throughout her journey, she encountered minor mechanical issues but persevered, relying on prayer and positivity to overcome challenges.
Ogboru hopes her achievement will foster stronger ties between Africa and Europe, promoting collaborative growth and mutual understanding.
“Africa and Europe can do better,” she said. “We have things to learn from each other, and I hope this experience encourages progress on both sides.”
Comptroller Wale Adenuga, the Customs Area Controller at Seme, commended Ogboru’s bravery and dedication, describing her feat as an inspiration to the Service and a reflection of the leadership values of the Comptroller-General of Customs.
“She has put Nigeria on the world map, and I believe trade facilitation will become better with the CGC’s vision,” Adenuga said.
Ogboru’s achievement has earned her widespread recognition within the Nigeria Customs Service, solidifying her position as a trailblazer and role model for women everywhere.
