Nigeria Cosmetics Industry: NICOS Seeks Closer Ties with Government Agencies, Others To Uplift Standards

The Society of Cosmetic Scientists of Nigeria (NICOS) is ready to work with relevant government agencies in Nigeria to grow and boost standards in the nation’s cosmetics industry.

President of NICOS, Grace Abamba said this at the Annual conference of the Association held in Lagos on Friday.

She noted that the cosmetics and personal care market in Nigeria is huge, highly fragmented and is worth an estimated $4b.

In her words: “We’re talking about the future we want for our industry, every single person uses cosmetics be it as little as shaving crème or as much as the whole package for ladies.

“So it is a really important industry in terms of consumer health and well being, we  are keen to talk about how we build…

We want to be at the table to serve and add our voice as we continue to build this amazing industry and we want to be on the world stage.” Abamba said.

Responding to questions on how NICOS would check substandard cosmetic products in the country, she said “We have industry specific product tests, we visit and inspect manufacturing premises, educate businesses to attain international standards.

So at NICOS we know what those standards are and it is important we  consistently comply with the standards to eliminate substandard products’’.

For her part, the Vice President, NICOS, Olusola Ojo said one of the objectives of the society was to create awareness of international standards so that the local cosmetics industry can compete on the global scene.

“That’s what we’re doing by creating awareness, the right education and making people realize that there are local researches being recognized internationally and so being able to put us Nigerians; formulators, business owners on the global map…

“To create that international standard for them to know what’s happening in the global scene so as to position their products to meet up with international best practices and also give us better opportunity to compete” Ojo stated.
