The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has received commendation from the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) for organizing a sensitization workshop on digital citizenship for persons with disabilities.
The workshop, themed “Empowering All – Advancing Digital Citizenship and Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities,” took place recently in Abuja.
The event highlighted the transformative potential of information and communication technologies in advancing equality, inclusion, and independent living for persons with disabilities.
Digital citizenship is beneficial in areas such as access to information, improved communication, life transformation and empowerment, enhanced digital education, inclusive remote employment, and tech-savvy skills.
The NCPWD Executive Secretary, Ayuba Gufwan, represented by Lawrence Idemudia, expressed delight in the NCC’s forward-thinking initiative.
He reiterated the NCPWD’s commitment to working collaboratively with the NCC and other stakeholders to ensure Nigeria’s digital transformation is inclusive, participatory, and empowering for all, especially persons with disabilities.
Some of the outcomes of the workshop include discussions on the importance of online safety, privacy, and ethical behaviors.
A presentation was made by Ikem Onuegbunam on bridging the digital divide gap and removing stigma on persons with disabilities.
The highlight of the workshop was the presentation of braille books by the NCC to the NCPWD, presented by the NCC’s Director of Digital Economy, Olatokunboh Oleyele, and received by Lawrence Idemudia on behalf of the Commission.
Certificates of participation were distributed to everyone in attendance.
