NASENI Kicks Off Irrigate Nigeria Project to Transform Agriculture

The Federal Government has kicked off the Irrigate Nigeria Project in Bauchi State, aiming to increase farmers’ income nationwide.

The project, launched on March 1, 2025, in Gamawa Local Government Area, is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), the project seeks to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector through sustainable irrigation systems.

This will enable farmers to achieve year-round farming, increase productivity, and reduce food prices.

The project has four key components. The deployment of centralized NASENI irrigation systems will support farming clusters in participating communities.

The provision of input-enhanced seeds and fertilizers, along with technical support, will complement irrigation equipment. A specialized commercial model will ensure commercial viability and long-term sustainability.

Farmers will repay support provided through convenient portions of their harvests, which will be pooled into a strategic food reserve.

Bauchi State Governor, Alhaji Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, applauded the Federal Government for initiating the project, stating that it aligns with the state’s goals of expanding irrigation farming and promoting sustainable agricultural infrastructure.
