The National Air Traffic Communicators’ Association of Nigeria (NACAN) and the Aeronautical Information Management Association of Nigeria (AIMAN) have joined forces to protest the Federal Government’s decision to deduct 50% of revenue generated by aviation agencies.
They demand an immediate exemption, citing the severe impact on safety and efficiency in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Rabiu Mohammed Sani, President of NACAN, warned that the policy poses a threat to safety and effectiveness, with activities in aviation agencies grinding to a halt.
He emphasized that NAMA and other parastatals should be treated as cost-recovery bodies, not profit-making organizations, and that increasing the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) deduction to 50% would be disastrous.
Dr. Ibrahim Audu, President of AIMAN, advised the Federal Government not to compromise safety by milking aviation agencies through revenue deductions.
He highlighted the critical role of the aviation industry in the economy and warned that any attempt to compromise would lead to doom.
Both leaders emphasized the need for a bailout, citing rising equipment and maintenance costs, and the difficulty in training and retraining professionals.
They urged the government to reconsider the deductions, which have negatively affected worker morale and encouraged experimentation rather than support for the agencies.
The joint protest by NACAN and AIMAN underscores the urgent need for the Federal Government to reassess its decision and prioritize the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
