The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) recently paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to discuss the implementation of biometric identification cards for dockworkers and seafarers.
Led by MWUN President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, the union delegation met with NIMASA Director-General Dr. Dayo Mobereola and his executives.
Abi emphasized the importance of biometric registration and identification of union members to distinguish legitimate dockworkers and seafarers from impostors.
This initiative aims to enhance security, prevent theft and pilferage, and promote a safe business environment in Nigerian ports.
The MWUN leader also highlighted the union’s ongoing collaboration with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to build a Seafarers Recreational Center in Apapa.
The project, supported by NIMASA, will provide a welcoming environment for seafarers during port calls and generate economic benefits for the union. Dr. Mobereola assured the union of NIMASA’s commitment to the project, which was initiated by his predecessor.
The visit underscored the strong partnership between MWUN and NIMASA. Dr. Mobereola congratulated Comrade Abi on his election victory and expressed hope for continued synergy between the two organizations in promoting Nigeria’s maritime sector.
