The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation and external interference in its upcoming elections.
In a statement, President General Adewale Adeyanju emphasized the need for a peaceful and democratic process, cautioning contestants and delegates against campaigns of calumny.
Adeyanju also lifted the embargo on campaign activities, announcing that campaigns can commence from January 6, 2025.
He assured that all elections will be held in Lagos, as it is the seat of power for the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).
The union leader stressed that the election is not a do-or-die affair and advised contestants to focus their campaigns on what they plan to do for the betterment of the union.
The MWUN statement specifically addressed an article published by “Ports & Ships” magazine, which claimed that eight aspirants are jostling to succeed Adeyanju amidst government and financial influences.
The union described the publication as “premature and misleading,” stating that forms for aspirants to declare their intention to contest have yet to be issued out.
Adeyanju warned parastatals, companies, and external agents to refrain from interfering in the union’s upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of the democratic process.
He stressed that MWUN remains a democratically run organization guided by its constitution, with a tradition that provides for a free and fair delegates’ conference, devoid of external interference or monetary inducement.
The union leader also expressed gratitude to the writer for recognizing the good record of the incumbent President-General, Adewale Adeyanju, in maintaining a neutral stance and ensuring a level playing field for all.
However, he cautioned against claims suggesting otherwise, describing them as “constructions intended to create division within the union”.
MWUN urged media outlets to prioritize accuracy and impartiality in their reporting, emphasizing that the union’s leadership election is not a political circus but a structured process designed to reflect the will of its members.
The union called on the media to desist from publishing unverified reports that could undermine the unity and stability of MWUN and industrial peace in the maritime sector.
As the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria prepares for its upcoming elections, the union remains committed to upholding its legacy of transparency and inclusion.
With a focus on ensuring a seamless transition of leadership that prioritizes the welfare of its members and the continued progress of the maritime industry, MWUN is poised to maintain its position as a leading voice in the Nigerian maritime sector.
