Lagos House of Assembly Impeaches Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Amidst Allegations of Financial Misconduct

In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on Monday, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions.

Obasa’s impeachment came days after reports emerged of his involvement in the withdrawal of N43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers and other questionable activities.

Obasa, 52, has been plagued by repeated charges of fraud and political thuggery throughout his speakership, which began on June 8, 2015.

In 2020, investigations by Peoples Gazette and Sahara Reporters uncovered allegations of Obasa diverting Lagos funds to his personal firms and bank accounts.

Following his impeachment, Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was sworn in as the new Speaker.

Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, is a former chief whip of the House and has been a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015.

Meranda’s ascension to the speakership marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly. As the new Speaker, she will be tasked with restoring stability and transparency to the House.

The impeachment of Obasa and the swearing-in of Meranda as the new Speaker have sent shockwaves through the Lagos State political landscape.

The development has raised questions about accountability and transparency within the state’s leadership.
