The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commended the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for making significant progress in its core duties.
The commendation was given by Paulo Paz, a Senior Economist at the Fiscal Affairs Department of the IMF, during a meeting with FIRS officials at the Revenue House in Abuja.
Paz recognized the good work that FIRS has been providing to citizens under the leadership of Chairman Zacch Adedeji.
He stated that the IMF would continue to support the agency in delivering effective tax administration for the growth and development of the country.
The IMF team visited Nigeria to explore areas where they could further support FIRS in addressing challenges arising from the recently signed tax laws.
Paz noted that the new tax laws would bring new impact to Nigeria and expressed the IMF’s willingness to support FIRS in implementing these laws.
Adedeji, represented by his Chief of Staff, Tayo Koleosho, applauded the IMF for its collaboration with FIRS, particularly in portfolio management and compliance programs.
He expressed interest in corporate planning and data portfolio management to ensure that FIRS’s strategy is well-implemented.
Bolaji Akintola, Coordinating Director, Corporate Services Group, highlighted the IMF’s role as a critical stakeholder in FIRS’s journey towards tax system reforms.
She noted that FIRS, with the support of the IMF, had conducted two systemic evaluation exercises using the Tax Administration Diagnostic Assessment Tool (TADAT) and had shown significant improvement in its performance.
