The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has inaugurated a chapter for the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), with a call to members to uphold high ethical standards.
ICAN President, Davidson Alaribe, made the charge during the inauguration ceremony in Abuja, highlighting the significance of the chapter due to FIRS being the largest employer of chartered accountants in the country.
Alaribe noted that out of 66,000 chartered accountants in Nigeria, over 2,800 are employed by FIRS, making it the largest concentration of ICAN members in any government agency.
He commended FIRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, for leading the transformation of the agency, which has become vital to the country’s economic development.
Adedeji, a Fellow of ICAN, emphasized the critical role chartered accountants play in Nigeria, particularly at FIRS. He praised ICAN members in FIRS for upholding the core values of the institute and setting high standards.
The pioneer chairperson of the FIRS branch, Dr. Josephine Onyia, thanked Adedeji and the FIRS management for their support. She promised to foster a culture of lifelong learning and professional development among members.
The inauguration of the ICAN-FIRS chapter is expected to promote financial integrity, economic advancement, and trust within the business community.
Other officers of the unit include Mrs. Adenike Adegoke, Vice-Chairperson; Abdurauf Aderemi, General Secretary; and Mrs. Patricia Ofili, Treasurer.
