House Committee on Finance Commends FIRS Progress, Pledges Continuous Support

The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has expressed satisfaction with the progress and achievements of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), promising to provide unwavering support to the agency.

This endorsement came after the Committee’s oversight visit to the FIRS headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Honourable James Faleke, Chairman of the Committee, praised the transformation under FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, noting the significant increase in tax revenue.

Faleke assured that the Committee will continue to back FIRS initiatives, stating, “We have always supported FIRS. Our committee is the main committee.

“If we withdraw our support, there will be a collapse of the system. It isn’t about being encouraged; it is about us doing our job, to do what is right”.

During the visit, the Committee toured the FIRS permanent headquarters, currently under construction in the Central Business District. The project, which began in 2011, is expected to be completed next year.

Faleke expressed optimism that upon completion and the passage of the Nigerian Revenue Service bill, the new building will facilitate increased revenue for Nigeria.

FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji thanked the Committee for their visit and support, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to cooperating with lawmakers to drive Nigeria’s progress.

Earlier this year, the House Committee on Finance approved FIRS’s 2024 budget of N446.34 billion, comprising N177.44 billion for personnel costs, N156.45 billion for overheads, and N112.45 billion for capital expenditures.

This development underscores the Committee’s confidence in FIRS’s ability to boost revenue collection and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth.

The FIRS has been working to enhance tax collection through various initiatives, including leveraging technology and restructuring its services to focus on customer needs.

With the continued support of the House Committee on Finance, FIRS is poised to make significant strides in improving Nigeria’s revenue landscape.
