The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued a sincere apology to Nigerians, especially the Christian community, for a controversial Easter message that was posted on social media.
The tax authority said the message, which stated, “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes,” was not intended to offend or disrespect anyone’s religious beliefs.
Dare Adekanmbi, the Special Adviser Media to the FIRS Chairman, clarified that the message was meant to creatively engage taxpayers and emphasize the importance of fulfilling their civic duty by paying taxes.
He noted that the FIRS is a secular organization and did not intend to undermine any religion or hurt the sentiments of any faith group.
The statement read in part, “In response to the concerns raised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the FIRS acknowledges the unintended misinterpretation of the message and offers a heartfelt apology for any offense caused.
“The agency’s primary goal is to collect revenue for the benefit of the country and promote compliance with tax laws.
“The FIRS regrets any misunderstanding and assures the public that it values religious diversity and respects all faiths.
“The agency appreciates the feedback received and will strive to communicate its messages more clearly in the future.”
Signed,
Dare Adekanmbi
Special Adviser Media to the FIRS Chairman.
