Delta Community and NIMASA Agree to Alternative Dispute Resolution in Public Petitions Case

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Abade-Toru Manga Community Development Initiative have agreed to resolve their dispute through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

The dispute, which was brought before the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, centered on allegations that NIMASA failed to establish educational and skills acquisition projects in coastal communities as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

During a recent hearing, both parties agreed to seek a peaceful settlement through ADR.

The Chairman of the committee, Mike Etaba, commended NIMASA for reaching out to the committee to resolve the matter through ADR, stating that the move is well appreciated and encouraged by the Public Petitions Committee.

Etaba expressed his appreciation for the harmonious agreement between both parties, emphasizing the importance of harmony in resolving disputes.

George Wilcox Noah, the Chairman of the Abade-Toru Manga Community Development Initiative, also expressed satisfaction with the resolution, stating that it shows that the community is not at odds with NIMASA.

The community leader assured that the agreement would lead to peaceful coexistence between the community and NIMASA, and that sea piracy affecting the Niger Delta region and the Gulf of Guinea would be mitigated.

The adoption of ADR in this matter demonstrates a commitment to finding peaceful and mutually beneficial solutions to disputes.

By choosing ADR, both parties can avoid the costs and time associated with litigation, while also preserving their relationship.

This approach also allows for a more flexible and creative solution, tailored to the specific needs of the parties involved.

The success of this ADR process may serve as a model for resolving similar disputes in the future, promoting a culture of peace and cooperation in the maritime industry.
