Deep Blue Project: House of Representatives Committee Seeks Alternative Funding

The Acting Chairman of the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education, and Administration, Honorable Uduak Odudoh, has urged for alternative sources of funding for the Federal Government Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure Project, known as the Deep Blue Project.

The project falls under the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and is currently funded by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.

During a Maritime Security Unit (MSU) Operational Maritime Capability Demonstration in Lagos, Honorable Uduak Odudoh, alongside the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, recognized the vital role the Deep Blue Project has played in maintaining peace in Nigerian waters.

Honorable Uduak Odudoh commended NIMASA for their efforts in funding the project but emphasized the need to explore additional sources of funding to sustain its success.

He highlighted the international recognition Nigeria has received for the project’s effectiveness in combating piracy and reducing security challenges in the maritime sector.

Dr. Dayo Mobereola reiterated NIMASA’s commitment to supporting the Deep Blue Project and ensuring its sustainability. He praised the efforts of the Maritime Security Unit personnel and encouraged them to continue their excellent work in securing the maritime space.

The House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education, and Administration unveiled the renovated aircrew accommodation and commissioned the interceptors’ marine workshop as part of the Deep Blue Project’s initiatives.

Rear Admiral Mustapha, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, demonstrated various tactics during the event, showcasing the capabilities of the project in enhancing maritime security.

Overall, the call for alternative funding for the Deep Blue Project aims to ensure its continued success in safeguarding Nigerian waters and boosting revenue generation for maritime agencies.
