In a bold move to combat fuel smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized 199,495 liters of smuggled petroleum products in Adamawa State. The seized fuel was recently auctioned to motorists at N630 per liter.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, led the operation, codenamed “Operation Whirlwind,” which intercepted the smuggled fuel using tankers, jerry cans, and drums. The seized fuel has a Duty Paid Value of N199.50 million
Adeniyi condemned the actions of smugglers, describing them as a direct assault on the economy. He assured Nigerians that the NCS would continue to adapt its strategies to close in on smugglers and protect the national economy.
The customs chief also revealed that smugglers used tactics such as night-time river crossings and concealment in unauthorized dispensing points.
However, he assured that there would be no safe haven for smugglers within the operational areas of the NCS.
