At least 31 people have lost their lives following a stampede at Kings Assembly, a church in Rivers state, Nigeria on Saturday.
According to a police spokesperson in the state, , Grace Iringe-Koko, hundreds of people who had turned up early on Saturday to receive to receive free gifts and food items at a Polo Club in the state capital, Port Harcourt venue of the church programme, broke through a gate, causing the stampede.
“People were there earlier and some got impatient and started rushing, which led to stampeding. The police are on the ground monitoring the situation while the investigation is ongoing,” said Iringe-Koko.
Report says the programme was scheduled for 9 a.m, but the invitees were already at the gate three hours earlier.
According to the report, as at about 6.30 a.m, as soon as bouncers opened a small gate, the multitude at the gate force themselves inside the premises , scrambling to get a chunk of the largess, leading to the number of deaths.
