As the world commemorates World Human Rights Day, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has called on the Akwa Ibom State government to reaffirm its commitment to upholding human rights and promoting justice in the state.
In a letter addressed to Governor Umo Eno, the CDHR emphasized the importance of human rights in building a just and equitable society.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” serves as a powerful reminder that human rights are essential to creating a brighter future for all.
The CDHR noted that despite progress made in promoting human rights, many challenges still exist in Akwa Ibom State.
The organization urged the state government to take concrete steps to address these challenges, including establishing a human rights commission, promoting access to justice, protecting vulnerable groups, promoting transparency and accountability, and supporting civil society organizations.
The CDHR also appealed to the governor to grant pardon to some repentant prisoners in the state prison during this year’s Christmas celebration.
This act of mercy, the organization noted, will not only bring joy and relief to the prisoners and their families but also demonstrate the governor’s commitment to upholding human rights and promoting justice and compassion in Akwa Ibom State.
The CDHR’s call to action is timely, given the importance of human rights in promoting justice, equality, and dignity for all.
