The Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, His Grace and Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, has called on leaders across Nigeria to prioritize effective governance over politicking.
Speaking at the commissioning of new Catechists from various Catholic parishes in Lagos into the Lagos Archdiocesan Guild of Catechists (LAGC), Archbishop Martins emphasized the need for leaders to focus on delivering tangible results that improve the lives of citizens.
“We appeal to politicians to recognize that they were voted to ensure life is better for the people,” Archbishop Martins said.
“You are voted to ensure the economy and social environment are good for the well-being of the people.”
He urged leaders to create an enabling environment for the welfare of Nigerians, rather than getting bogged down in political alignments and realignments.
The Archbishop lamented that many politicians are preoccupied with politicking, which has distracted them from addressing pressing needs and welfare of Nigerians.
“Politicians are aligning and realigning, decamping and recamping, and all of that,” he said. “It’s really putting governance in a bad state”.
Archbishop Martins also charged the new Catechists to lead people to knowledge of God and the teachings of the church, so that they may have faith and follow God’s teachings. The event was themed “Do Not Lose Heart; Awakening Pilgrims of Hope”
