Nigeria is poised to host a groundbreaking global workshop on Deep Seabed activities, a significant step towards harnessing the Blue Economy sector for sustainable growth and development.
The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, in collaboration with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), is organizing the event to build in-country expertise and equip policy makers and industry professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage deep-sea resources sustainably.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, emphasized the importance of the workshop, stating that it will offer hands-on training for Nigerian researchers and stakeholders, allowing them to engage directly with international experts and advanced technologies.
With Nigeria’s vast ocean resources still largely unexplored, the workshop aims to provide a platform to tap into these resources sustainably, balancing economic growth with environmental protection.
The event, scheduled to take place in Abuja from September 17-18, 2024, will feature several presentations from renowned experts, including “An Overview of the Deep Seabed: Prospects for Nigeria” by Director General of the National Boundary Commission (NBC), Adamu Adaji.
The workshop will provide an opportunity for professionals and stakeholders in Nigeria’s maritime sector to collaborate with the Federal Government in harnessing the resources of the seas and oceans, creating jobs and wealth for the country.
The deep seabed, lying beyond national jurisdiction, is considered the common heritage of humanity, covering over 54 percent of the world’s oceans.
It presents a future source of mineral resources to support an increasing global population, addresses challenges related to accessing land-based deposits, and provides the rare metals necessary to drive the future renewable economy.
Moreover, the deep seabed plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change, absorbing excess CO2 produced by human activities and helping to reduce the greenhouse effect.
By hosting this global workshop, Nigeria demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development and its determination to tap into the vast resources of the Blue Economy.
The event promises to be a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards harnessing the potential of its ocean resources, creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
