ILO, MWUN Strengthen Ties to Boost Maritime Sector

The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has received a courtesy visit from the Regional Advisor of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Dr. Amos Hosea Kuje.

The meeting, held at the MWUN headquarters in Lagos, aimed to strengthen the relationship between the ILO and MWUN.

During the meeting, Dr. Amos emphasised the need for the swift implementation of the Cabotage law to boost the fortunes of sailors in the Nigerian maritime industry.

He advocated for increased employment opportunities for Nigerian seafarers and regular training to equip them with modern operational methodologies.

The ILO advisor also recommended the development of a single Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for ratings and officers on board vessels.

The ILO advisor stressed the importance of upgrading maritime training institutions to ensure that Nigerian seafarers are competitive globally.

He noted that this would increase the significance of Nigerian seafarers in the global maritime industry.

Comrade Bunu thanked Dr. Amos for his visit and assured him that the MWUN would work towards implementing the discussed issues.

He promised to collaborate with relevant agencies to address the challenges facing Nigerian seafarers and enhance productivity in the maritime sector.

The meeting demonstrated the commitment of both the ILO and MWUN to strengthen their partnership and promote the welfare of Nigerian seafarers.
