At the recent 35th annual conference of the African Public Relations Association (APRA) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria highlighted various digital social investments facilitated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, the Head of Media Management Relations at the NCC and newly elected Secretary-General of APRA, presented on the digital social investments and infrastructure expansion initiatives in Nigeria.
His presentation, titled “Digital Inclusion as Arbiter of Accessible PR: A Case of the Nigerian Communications Commission,” shed light on 36 initiatives aimed at promoting infrastructure expansion, supporting SMEs, empowering educational institutions, fostering innovation, and enhancing digital skills among Nigerian youths.
Some of the initiatives showcased include the Advanced Digital Awareness Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADAPTI), Campus Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIEP) programme, Digital Appreciation Project (DAP) for secondary schools, and the Nigerian Girls Can Code Competition, among others.
These efforts have significantly contributed to bridging the digital divide and promoting digital literacy in Nigeria.
Dr. Ibietan emphasized the importance of digital inclusion in enabling individuals and groups to fully participate in the digital society.
He highlighted the role of digital infrastructure in supporting economic growth, enhancing civic engagement, and reducing inequalities.
The COVID-19 pandemic further underscored the critical role of digital infrastructure in sustaining social and economic activities during crises.
In conclusion, Dr. Ibietan stressed the need for continuous communication among stakeholders to ensure the efficient management and maximization of benefits from social investment and infrastructure projects.
Nigeria’s commitment to investing in broadband infrastructure has positioned the country to effectively navigate challenges and harness opportunities in the digital age.
