Alleged Standard Violations: African Steel Refutes Claims of Ikorodu Factory Closure, Reiterates Commitment to International Best Practices

African Steel Limited’s management has dismissed recent media reports suggesting that its Ikorodu Steel Factory was shut down by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for failing to meet standards, labeling them as false.

In a statement released by African Steel Limited Management, the reports were attributed to the actions of competitors seeking to gain an unfair advantage in the market.

The statement, signed by Director Ravi Sharma, clarified that SON officials had visited the African Steel premises in Ikorodu for regulatory purposes, conducting inventory checks and taking samples of steel products for further testing and documentation. However, at no point did SON officials close down the factory.

African Steel Limited, a member of the African Industries Group, is committed to upholding ethical standards in all its operations in Nigeria and globally.

Sharma assured customers of the company’s dedication to providing quality products and urged them to disregard the false reports.

Sharma reiterated the Group’s commitment to maintaining high standards in its products and services, in line with regulatory requirements.

The company has made significant investments in the Nigerian economy, including an integrated iron ore mining, processing, and steel production plant in Kaduna state.

SON Director of Product Certification, Enebi Onucheyo, supported African Steel’s account, confirming that no facilities were shut down during the recent inspections.

He explained that the inspections were part of routine checks to prevent the circulation of substandard iron rods in the market.

Enebi emphasized SON’s determination to crack down on standards violations, particularly in sectors like steel production. Offenders will face prosecution under the SON Act and other relevant laws.

Stakeholders were encouraged to continue sharing information on product standards and safety with regulatory authorities for the benefit of the nation’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
