The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has approved a month waiver of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)-Valuation system following public outcry and the recent stakeholders town hall meeting in Lagos, organised by the Service to evaluate the system.
In a statement, the Comptroller General of NCS, Col. Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd), said the one month grace periiod was approved, having listened to public outcry, to facilitate clearing the backlog of vehicles held up in the ports as a result of the industrial action by freight forwarders.
According to the statement, uniform application of rebates will be used for assessment of all vehicles using correct values during the grace period
The statement read in part: “For the avoidance of doubt, the VIN-Valuation protocol is still in operation as reviews and updates are being captured in our systems to reflect the genuine concerns of stakeholders.
“As a responsive and responsible agency, Nigeria Customs Service will sustain it’s consultations with stakeholders in line with Article 2 of WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement for a smoother Customs Stakeholders relationship.”
