Maritime Community Celebrates International Maritime Day 2025

The maritime community globally has come together to celebrate International Maritime Day (IMD) 2025, with the theme “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

The day is observed annually on September 25 and highlights the importance of the ocean to humanity, providing food, trade, jobs, biodiversity, and climate regulation.

The Vice Chairman of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, celebrated the day with the maritime community, emphasizing the need to protect the ocean and adhere to the rules, regulations, and standards of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code.

He noted that the ocean is a gift to humanity and that its protection is crucial for the benefit of all.

Comrade Adeyanju stressed the importance of cooperation among world leaders to form policies that would reduce hazardous emissions and protect the ocean, which is a vital source of Nigeria’s blue economy.

He commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his vision and achievements in creating awareness and wealth in the maritime sector.

The ITF Vice Chairman urged Nigerians to take up professionalism in the maritime trade and blue economy, emphasizing its importance to local and international trade.

He felicitated with maritime workers in Nigeria and across the world, believing that together, they can protect the ocean for the benefit of all.

The celebration of International Maritime Day 2025 highlights the importance of the ocean and the need for sustainable practices to protect it.
