FIRS Chairman Emphasizes Importance of Tax Policy Development for West Africa’s Economic Growth

Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote tax policy development and capacity building for tax administrators in West Africa.

Speaking at the opening of the West African Tax Administration Forum (WATAF) Country Correspondents’ conference in Abuja, Adedeji stressed that a well-articulated tax policy is crucial for promoting economic development through effective domestic revenue mobilization.

Adedeji noted that Nigeria has historically been at the forefront of promoting international tax cooperation and has been a key contributor to the development of WATAF.

He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in tax administration, recognizing the need for collaboration in addressing common challenges.

The FIRS chairman encouraged participants to engage in discussions, build professional networks, and implement knowledge gained to improve tax systems. He commended WATAF for fostering collaboration and capacity building among members.

The conference brought together participants from Sierra Leone, Ghana, Cote D’Ivoire, Liberia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria.

Adedeji’s emphasis on tax policy development aligns with the need for effective revenue mobilization to promote economic development in West Africa.
