Nigerian Ports Authority Vows to Support Women’s Rights and Equality

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting women’s rights and equality, both within and outside the organization.

Managing Director Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho made this pledge during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration, themed “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality.”

Dr. Dantsoho emphasized that NPA does not merely pay lip service to women’s rights and economic empowerment. Instead, the organization actively recognizes and advocates for women’s rights and equality.

He highlighted NPA’s achievements, including extended maternity leave of six months for women, ensuring pregnant women are not discriminated against regardless of marital status, and allowing nursing mothers to report late and leave early.

The NPA has also ensured women hold key responsibilities within the Authority, with a woman serving as Executive Director, Finance and Administration, and at least 12 women holding General Manager and Port Manager positions.

Women are also represented in various units, including pilots, fire services, security, medical personnel, and engineers.

Despite these achievements, Dr. Dantsoho acknowledged that there is still work to be done to address the various forms of discrimination, inequality, and abuse faced by women and girls.

He pledged that the NPA will continue to support women’s rights and equality, creating opportunities for women and girls to reach their full potential.

International Women’s Day is a global celebration recognizing women’s achievements, progress toward gender equality, and advocating for increased efforts to create equitable societies and end gender-based violence and discrimination.
