Akwa Ibom Governor Under Fire for Refusing Clemency to Prisoner

By Newsshelve Correspondent.

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) is expressing deep concern over Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umoh Eno’s, refusal to grant clemency to a  prisoner awaiting trial in Akwa Ibom prisons.

The CDHR, in a statement signed by the state chairman, Comrade Ndifreke Afangide, said it previously made this appeal on the occasion of the 2024 World Human Rights Day but the Governor declined to show clemency.

“The CDHR’s appeal was rooted in the profound wisdom that a society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members.

“Unfortunately, Governor Eno’s administration chose to ignore this appeal, which is shocking given their commitment to justice and mercy.”

The CDHR highlighted the need to apply the justice system as a powerful tool for rehabilitation and redemption.

“In the context of Akwa-Abasi Ibom State, which is uniquely named after God, we recognize that we are called to be a shining example to others, demonstrating compassion, justice, and mercy.

As such, we urge your administration to take immediate action to address the plight of prisoners who are unjustly incarcerated in Akwa Ibom prisons and uphold their human rights.” Said Comrade Afangide.

The CDHR is now reiterating its request, emphasizing that ignoring the pleas of the vulnerable undermines the fabric of society.

The organization fears that by turning a deaf ear to the cries of the poor, the state risks undermining its own moral foundation.

As the CDHR so eloquently puts it, “Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered” (Proverbs 21:13).

“We reiterate our appeal to your administration to reconsider our request and grant clemency to this prisoner.

“We believe that this act of mercy will not only bring joy to the prisoners and their families but also demonstrate your administration’s commitment to upholding human rights and dignity in Akwa Ibom State.”

It is imperative that Governor Eno’s administration takes immediate action to address the plight of repentant prisoners and those awaiting trial in Akwa Ibom prisons.
