Oyo State Government and UNICEF Join Forces to Promote Handwashing Culture

By Newsshelve Correspondent.

In a bid to combat the spread of diseases, the Oyo State Government and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have urged residents to prioritize proper handwashing practices.

Dotun Oyelade, Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, disclosed this in a recent statement.

At an event commemorating the 2024 Global Handwashing Day in Okolo, Ibarapa-East Local Government, Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (OYORUWASSA) Chairman Babalola Afobaje emphasized the life-saving importance of handwashing with soap.

Handwashing is crucial in preventing the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and pneumonia. Afobaje noted that significant progress has been made in promoting hygiene in Oyo State, thanks to the support of UNICEF and other partners.

However, he stressed the need to maintain and improve handwashing practices beyond public health emergencies.

UNICEF Water and Sanitation Specialist Monday Johnson highlighted Ibarapa-East’s key role in the handwashing campaign, emphasizing its impact in preventing disease outbreaks and reducing the risk of future pandemics.

Johnson also acknowledged the lack of access to toilet facilities in some parts of Ibarapa-East and expressed UNICEF’s commitment to ending open defecation in the area.

The importance of handwashing as a health necessity was repeatedly emphasized. Handwashing with soap is essential in preventing sanitation-related diseases.

Community involvement is also crucial, with market vendors, teachers, parents, and guardians urged to promote handwashing practices in their homes.

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target, which focuses on access to water and sanitation, was also highlighted.

Parents and stakeholders must work together to improve hygiene services and access to water and sanitation.

The event featured demonstrations of proper handwashing techniques by the Director, Environmental Health Services, Ibarapa East LGA, Elizabeth Akintola. Attendees included local government officials, traditional rulers, and residents.

By promoting handwashing culture, Oyo State Government and UNICEF aim to create a healthier and more resilient community. As Afobaje noted, “Each of us has a role to play in making handwashing a univer

sal practice.”
