The Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji, has reaffirmed his commitment to Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in reenergizing waterways operations.
This commitment was made during his 2-day working visit to the NIWA office in Warri, Delta state, as part of his ongoing familiarization tour of facilities across the country.
Oyebamiji expressed optimism about the synergy between NIWA and Burutu Port Management, which he believes will boost commercial activities along the Delta waterways.
He emphasized the importance of PPP, stating that it is the norm globally and aligns with the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy’s vision.
Regarding waterways security, Oyebamiji highlighted various initiatives taken by the Minister, Adegboyega Oyetola, and NIWA’s own efforts to partner with security agencies.
He noted that NIWA has engaged with village heads across the coastal area to gather intelligence on security threats and has employed securities, including the Marine Police and gunboats.
During his assessment of the facilities, Oyebamiji identified areas for improvement and prioritization to position the Inland Waterways to serve the people better and improve revenue base.
He also met with workers, reiterating his commitment to their welfare, including training, promotions, remunerations, and education for their children.
While acknowledging funding constraints, he urged workers to see their present position as an opportunity to make a difference in making Inland Waterways more efficient and productive.
