NIMASA Prioritizes Quality Training for Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme Beneficiaries

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality training to beneficiaries of the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP).

The agency’s Director General, Dr. Mobereola, clarified that the 296 NSDP beneficiaries at Centurion University in India will receive adequate capacity development to become globally employable seafarers.

Dr. Mobereola dismissed media reports claiming that NIMASA plans to withdraw NSDP cadets from Centurion University, stating that the agency is merely conducting due diligence on the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure the best interests of the Nigerian students are protected.

He explained that NIMASA is addressing gaps in the MoU, including issues related to course duration, accreditation, and funding. The agency is working to prevent additional years of study and uncertainties for the students.

Dr. Mobereola emphasized that NIMASA’s primary concern is the safety and well-being of its students, and the agency will not be deterred by sponsored media campaigns or petitions.

He highlighted that the NSDP was introduced in 2009 to bridge the global shortage of seafarers by training young Nigerians in specialized courses such as Marine Engineering, Nautical Sciences, and Nautical Surveys.

The agency’s commitment to quality training and capacity development for NSDP beneficiaries remains unwavering, ensuring they become globally employable seafarers.

NIMASA’s efforts aim to enhance the Nigerian maritime industry’s competitiveness and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
