40 Million Barred Phone Lines Could Be Lost if Not Linked to NIN – NCC Warns

The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) has issued a warning that telecom operators may reclaim about 40 million mobile lines that have been barred due to subscribers failing to link their SIMs to their National Identity Numbers (NIN).

Reuben Mouka, the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, delivered this message in Abuja, emphasizing that the deadline for linking the lines was February 28, 2024.

“If the barred lines are not addressed within the next 180 days, they will lose the ability to receive calls and will only be able to text and make calls.

“After this period, they may also lose the ability to make calls and risk forfeiting their lines to their service providers within 365 days.” Mouka said.

He advised those affected to enroll for their NIN if they have not already done so, or to take their number to their network providers to have their lines restored. Retrieval of lines can only be done by the network providers.

Recall that the NCC had mandated all phone users in the country to link their SIMs to their NIN to prevent the use of phones for criminal activities.

The deadline for compliance was set for February 28.
