NIMASA Takes Anti-Stowaway Campaign to Snake Island Community

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has intensified efforts to curb stowaway incidents by taking its public awareness campaign to grassroots communities, beginning with Snake Island in Lagos.

As part of the sensitisation exercise, the Agency engaged community leaders, youths and residents on the dangers, risks and legal consequences of attempting to stow away on vessels.

Residents of the community commended NIMASA for the initiative, describing the enlightenment campaign as timely and impactful in addressing a growing maritime security concern.

Leading the Agency’s delegation, the Head of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Unit, Mr. Mudi Isa, said stowaway incidents tarnish Nigeria’s image within the global maritime community and pose significant security risks.

He reaffirmed NIMASA’s commitment to tackling the challenge through sustained public enlightenment and community engagement, noting that raising awareness at the grassroots remains a key strategy in preventing stowaway incidents and strengthening maritime security.

The campaign forms part of NIMASA’s broader efforts to enhance maritime safety, protect Nigeria’s international reputation, and support the development of a secure and sustainable blue economy.
