Civic technology organisation BudgIT has condemned a violent attack on one of its Katsina State officers, Mustapha Sadiq, describing the incident as “brutal” and unacceptable.
According to a statement issued by the organisation, Sadiq was assaulted in his residence in Katsina on the night of April 4, 2026, by five armed assailants wielding machetes. The attackers reportedly inflicted severe injuries to his head and upper body during the нападение.
BudgIT said the assailants also attempted to steal Sadiq’s vehicle but were unsuccessful. The victim sustained serious injuries and required urgent medical attention.
The organisation noted that it is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and has yet to determine whether it was linked to Sadiq’s professional duties, particularly his work tracking public projects and promoting government accountability.
However, BudgIT expressed concern over the nature and severity of the incident, warning that it raises broader questions about safety and security in communities, especially for civic actors.
The group confirmed that it has filed a formal complaint with the Nigeria Police Force and is engaging relevant security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
BudgIT called for a “prompt, thorough, and transparent investigation” into the attack, urging authorities to also examine whether the incident may be connected to Sadiq’s civic engagement work in what it described as a challenging and increasingly restrictive environment.
The organisation further called on authorities to strengthen measures to protect citizens and respond swiftly to violent crimes, warning that such incidents could erode public trust if left unaddressed.
“Our thoughts are with Mustapha and his family at this difficult time,” the statement said, wishing him a full recovery and reaffirming its commitment to supporting him during his recuperation.
The statement was signed by Vahyala Kwaga, Country Director of BudgIT.
