The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has announced that the Nigeria Customs Service will conduct mandatory drug tests for all incoming recruits and serving officers as part of its efforts to create a drug-free institution.
The directive is aimed at ensuring that personnel possess sound judgment and operational integrity, particularly those assigned to revenue collection, enforcement, and border security.
The CGC disclosed this during recently the closing session of the Customs’ 2025 Conference in Abuja, stating that the measure is designed to prevent recruits with substance-abuse tendencies from entering the Service.
He noted that the Service would no longer tolerate personnel making sensitive decisions while under the influence of drugs.
Adeniyi explained that the decision was informed by experiences where erratic behavior or poor decision-making was linked to substance misuse.
He warned that the era of overlooking early signs of substance abuse in the ranks is over and that the Service would prioritize the health and well-being of its personnel.
The mandatory drug test will be carried out across all Zones, Commands, and at the Headquarters, and the Service is committed to ensuring that all officers and men are physically and mentally fit to deliver effective service.
